BEATS & PEACES ft. Jem Panufnik aka Jem Stone from Finger Lickin – 006

Beats & Peaces 006 boasts a huge hour-and-a-half run time to celebrate Chinese New Year as host Janette Slack catches up with the multi-talented co-founder and graphic artist behind Finger Lickin’ Records Jem Panufnik aka Jem Stone. He is more than just a DJ – with classical music roots and training – but a composer of intelligent dance floor bangers and chillers, using knowledge of funk and a depth that result in a layered, vibrant and complex listening experience. He is a gifted all-rounder and an esteemed artist, operating under multiple guises Soul of Man, Bush Doctors, Rhythm By Nature just to name a few.

Son of Sir Andrzej Panufnik – a Polish classical music composer and conductor – Jem’s musical tastes gravitated to more electronic genres with p-funk vibes, house, hip hop and eventually the intellectual side of breakbeat. His new track, ‘Moose Knuckle Sandwich’ out on Bonafido sometime this year or maybe even next – but you heard it here first on Clockenflap Music. Jem opens this extra-long podcast-style show talking about his hometown Twickenham in London, near Eel Pie Island that was once the bedrock of British Rhythm and Blues. The pair then cover crucial topics like dealing with being the ‘black sheep’ of the family, artists and genres not being defined by tempo and trusting that hard work will pay off and help attract the right people to your tribe.

Don’t miss this heart-felt and interesting conversation with a funky breakbeat treasure-hunt-of-tunes as the perfect backdrop and Happy Chinese New Year of the Ox! Janette has fun DJing his tracks in-between the chats and adds an Easter Egg or two, if you can spot any, do write in and let us know.
